The Pomegranate Category

Pomegranates are the Middle East's entry for superfruit, and it's nothing to sneeze at. In fact, with all those antioxidants and vitamin C, it's not too likely you'll be sneezing anytime soon after eating one.

What makes "pom" such a formidable fruit is the fact that it has a great taste and it can claim so many different healthful compounds... More than any other superfruit but Acai.

For instance, Pomegranate has been shown to have:

a Pomegranate Fruit
  • Many phytochemicals, including beta-carotene
  • Many polyphenols, including catechins & gallocatechins
  • Many Antioxidant compounds, such as anthocyanins, prodelphinidins, delphinidin, cyanidin, and pelargonidin
  • Above average amounts of Vitamins B5, C, and K (potassium)

Clearly, pomegranates are "trying to cover all bases" healthwise... Although it's strength lies mainly only in quantities of types of health benefits, not specifically in any one area. (Its' impressive Tannin count may be an exception.)

Pomegranates were common throughout ancient history, and seen as the food of kings for many different ancient kingdoms, including Babylon. Today the pom fruit's odd structure makes it seem too difficult to eat or even 'weird' to many people, but pom juice is commonly sold in all supermarkets throughout the world. (In fact, grenadine is simply concentrated and sweetened pom juice!)
