The Sub-Superfruit Category

Let's face it, there are a lot of superfruit-wannabes out there... Blueberries, Cranberries, raspberries, tomatoes, hawthorn berries, the list goes on and on.

In fact, as we learn more about superfruits and their unique antioxidants, phytonutrients, and vitamins, some Sub-superfruits may get promoted to full-fledged superfruits, while so-far "confirmed" superfruits could possibly be demoted down to this level.

This isn't to say that blueberries and raspberries aren't awesome for your health... They just haven't crossed that line however to superfruitiness.

Where exactly that line is drawn will be the subject of much debate here in this community. We'll keep you up to date on the latest contenders here on this page.

Healing Power of Papaya

The papaya is a very healthy fruit but most people do not like eating it because it has a rather unique taste and it is not very sweet. Also, it did not use to be widely available in most countries. The papaya is the fruit of the plant Carica papaya, in the genus Carica. It is native to the tropics of the Americas, and was cultivated in Mexico several centuries before the emergence of the Mesoamerican classic cultures. It is sometimes called a “big melon” or a “paw paw” but the North American pawpaw is a different species, in the genus Asimina. The juice has been seen to have an antiproliferative effect on liver cancer cells cultured in the laboratory, probably due to its component of lycopene.

It provides information on the biology, propagation and use of the fruit, and descriptions of the scientifific basis of production practices and orchard management, as well as post-harvest processing.

Very Blueberry

Although blueberry is not as good for you as superfruits, it is very healthy and it is much easier to find than most of the superfruits in most countries. Even when it is not blueberry season, you can usually still get blueberry in your grocery stores. They taste much better in season though usually. A lot of people eat blueberry because it is tasty but many eat it for its health benefits. Groundbreaking studies show that blueberries contain disease-fighting compounds not found in any other food. The high amounts of antioxidants found in them are believed to have powerful anti-memory-loss and cancer-preventing properties. And, despite their natural sweetness, blueberries are remarkably low in the carbohydrates and sugar calories overabundant in other fruit. VERY BLUEBERRY goes beyond the blueberry muffin (though it does include a sub-lime recipe for it!) and features this essential fruit in innovative new recipes like Goat Cheese Tart with Caramelized Onions and Blueberries.

Introducing Cupuacu

The Cupuacu fruit, also from Brazil, is a real contender to become an official superfruit one day… Pending more scientific testing, of course. Pronounced “Koo-Poo-Ah-Soo,” this tasty fruit looks like a mango but is actually closely related to Chocolate (!) so you know it tastes pretty good already. However as you’ll see in the film [...]

Blueberry Spotlight

This well-produced little propaganda piece by the US Highbush Blueberry council offers some great general information on production, usage, and health benefits of blueberries. It’s great for showing to schoolkids, I’d guess, or perhaps introducing blueberries in general to people who simply aren’t familiar with them or how to eat them…
Keep in mind while watching [...]
